Don't Be Fooled

Living in a world that is so "connected", we are constantly being bombarded by messages on social media, websites, billboards and commercials about the latest super foods that claim to relieve all of your dieting despairs. From enticing packing to catchy phrases, it can seem impossible to decipher all of the distracting messages. Here are a few foods that are often perceived as "healthy" but can be packed full of sneaky ingredients like refined sugars, processed grains and artificial coloring and sweeteners.

Granola/Granola Bars

While rolled or steel cut oats can be packed full of fiber and a nutritious, heart healthy start to your day, store-bought granola and granola bars are typically packed full of unnecessary sugar and fat. These sweet treats are often closer to candy than a bowl of oatmeal! Instead of choosing the pre-made version, try making your own with whole oats, nuts and seeds and dried fruit! Here are a few of our favorite recipes:

The Best Healthy Granola

Honey Almond Flax Granola

5-Ingredient Granola Bars

Dried Fruit

While dried fruit can be an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and fiber and a super easy snack, many food companies add sugar, sulfur and other preservatives to increase shelf life. Be sure to double-check the label to ensure there are NO added ingredients and stick with a single serving size. Better yet, try making this delicious treat at home!

Dried Mango

Nut Butters

Peanuts, cashews and almonds are an excellent source of monounsaturated fats that are known for their ability to reduce cardiovascular disease risk and maintaining a healthy weight. The trouble comes when food companies add extra ingredients like sugar. Always read the food label and look for a simple list with only one to two ingredients like peanuts and salt.

Microwave Popcorn

While popcorn can be a low calorie, high fiber treat, there are a plethora of "light" options on the market that are loaded with potentially hazardous chemical ingredients, preservatives and artificial flavorings. It is SO easy to make your own popcorn and avoid all of the health pitfalls that come from the bagged variety. Simply heat a few teaspoons of avocado oil in a large pot, add ¼ Non-GMO popcorn kernels, cover with a lid and let pop until you hear less popping per second. Top with Himalayan sea salt and enjoy!

Frozen Yogurt

We have all fallen victim to this enticing, sweet treat. It sounds and looks much healthier than the frozen cream of times past, however, frozen yogurt makes up for in sugar what it is missing in fat, otherwise it wouldn't taste nearly as good! If you're looking for an at-home version, try topping plain Greek yogurt with fresh fruit, dark chocolate chips and a drizzle of honey. Better yet, when the craving strikes, choose a small version of the real stuff. We love Trickling Springs Organic Ice Cream.
